Posidonia 2018 to host International unveil of Industry TITANS JV – International Maritime Industries (IMI)

Global shipping exhibition gears up for largest show in history

Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s state oil company, and its partners; Lamprell Plc; the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (“Bahri”); and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI), have chosen Posidonia 2018 for the global unveiling of its International Maritime Industries (IMI) joint venture. When the yard is fully operational in 2022, IMI will offer new build and maintenance, repair and overhaul of vessels, including Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) and Offshore Rigs. Spread over 11.8 square kilometers, IMI will be one of the world’s largest full-service maritime facilities.

To date, IMI has committed orders for 20 Offshore Rigs and 52 VLCCs to be built over the next decade. IMI is also in the process of establishing a supply chain ecosystem adjacent to the yard to drive localization, agility and efficiency.

The decision to leverage Posidonia as the international launchpad for its latest venture reinforces the significance and reputation of the world’s most prestigious shipping signature event.

“We have chosen to participate at Posidonia 2018 to showcase International Maritime Industries’ position as a global competitor and regional hub for maritime industries and services. Given our geographic location and our proximity to strategic shipping routes, IMI is well positioned to be the partner of choice for new build ships and rigs, as well as maintenance, repair and overhaul services. Utilizing the strengths and expertise of the four partners, we are able of offer customers optimum lifecycle cost, efficiency, and leading-edge technology,” said Fathi K. Al-Saleem, CEO of IMI.

IMI will be joining over 1,850 companies from a wide range of maritime industry sectors currently preparing and planning their participation at the June 4-8 event to be held at the Athens Metropolitan Expo across an exhibitor floor space spanning 40,000 sqm. Organisers expect to welcome over 22.000 shipping executives and government delegation members during the five days of the event, traditionally regarded as the playground of the world renowned Greek shipping community.

“Posidonia’s strength is drawn by the collective quality and buying power of its exhibitors, delegates and visitors, debutants or repeaters, who commit funds and resources every two years to be part of a signature industry event that is a true celebration of everything shipping stands for,” said Theodore Vokos, Executive Director, Posidonia Exhibitions S.A., the biennial event’s organiser.

“A key attraction remains the strong presence of the powerful Greek shipowning community at every Posidonia which is leading global newbuilding activity with 61 Greek companies having ships on order worth an estimated US$16bn,” said Vokos.

Over 260 ships built to high specs, with many of them Tier II and Tier III compliant, are on order for Greek interests at the dawn of 2018, 105 of them contracted in 2017.

The spending spree is regulation driven and stems from the recent ratification of the ballast water treatment treaty and type approvals by the US Coast Guard, as well as new regulations regarding SOX and NOX emissions and Monitoring, Reporting and verification (MRV) requirements, which have speeded up investment in scrubbers, LNG fueled ships and digitalisation of operations. With Greek interests currently running the most modern fleet globally and operating across the globe, compliance with new environmental regulations is a must for Greek shipowners.

Some shipping companies, such as Capital Maritime & Trading, predict that new environmental regulations will make a quarter of today’s global fleet obsolete, giving them reason to invest $1,1 billion in upgrading 71 ships and ordering new ones.

This flurry in new building orders and fleet upgrades is drawing the world’s shipping community to Posidonia 2018 in bigger numbers than ever before with commitments or expressions of interest surpassing any previously set event record.

With space bookings already up by10% compared to the same time two years ago and over 80% of the exhibition floor already committed, the organisers had to add another 1,000 sqm of exhibition space to meet demand and are confident that Posidonia 2018 will generate once more new business for exhibitors and offer visitors direct access to the latest technology and the entire spectrum of maritime services and products available on the global maritime market.

Once more the Posidonia exhibition space will be dominated by some 20 national pavilions and especially the leading shipbuilding nations, such as the traditional Far Eastern power houses of China, Japan and South Korea. Maritime Centres such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and many others will once more present their wide range of services to the global shipping industry and long-standing exhibitors such as the USA, Denmark and Holland will field greater participations than before. But national participation is not only reserved for traditional maritime nations, as Posidonia welcomes newcomers such as landlocked Luxembourg and agricultural economies like Georgia, while Poland will also make its debut. The majority of flag states will also be present at Posidonia, with Panama, Liberia, the Marshal Islands, Malta, Cyprus, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and Palau amongst others returning once more to the heartbeat of global shipping.

Among the new highlights we count the Greek pavilion organised by HEMEXPO, the association of Hellenic Marine Equipment Manufacturers and Exporters, which will span over 400 sqm of exhibition space with the mission to promote Greek engineering and experienced maritime solutions for the global shipping industry and looking to further expand its offerings on the makers lists of the most important shipyards worldwide.

The Greek presence is complemented by a second Greek pavilion, organised by the Worldwide Industrial & Marine Association (WIMA), representing Greek companies active in the fields of ship construction, ship spare parts & supplies, ship technical and general services and marine equipment manufacturing.

Another important new participant is the Greek utility company Gastrade, backed by Gaslog Ltd, which will manage the Alexandroupolis Independent Natural Gas System (INGS), a modern, cutting edge technology project which comprises an offshore floating unit for the reception, storage and re-gasification of LNG and a system of a subsea and an onshore gas transmission pipeline through which the natural gas is shipped into the Greek National Natural Gas System (NNGS) and onwards to the final consumers.

And while oil continues to fuel humanity’s universal transportation needs, data is fast becoming the new oil spinning out a whole new brave world where artificial intelligence and smart shipping will dominate. The drive for digitalisation, the increased needs for smart shipping solutions and high demand for constant fleet connectivity has led to an impressive Posidonia outing by the ICT sector, with over 30 companies confirming their participation in order to compete for a bigger slice of the ever-growing needs of the most modern fleet the world has ever seen.

The Posidonia conference and seminars programme has started filling up and will once more include over 30 conferences, product presentations, technical seminars and press conferences, all taking place at the Metropolitan Expo. The conference programme will start with the prestigious Tradewinds Shipowners Forum which will tackle current issues facing shipping.

An important new event will be the HEMEXPO powered “SUPPORT THE LOCAL MARITIME INDUSTRY SUMMIT”, organised by Newsfront – Naftiliaki, to take place under the auspices of the Marine Technical Managers Association (MARTECMA), which will give shipping companies the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the state of the art HEMEXPO products and services. This conference will enable them to make educated decisions on future investments going forward and will also further promote the Greek maritime cluster, which is on track to contributing an ever-growing part of the national GDP.

A new feature of the Posidonia Conference and Seminar programme will be the 4th Energy & Shipping Seminar, organised by the Institute of Energy for South East Europe (IENE), which will provide an in depth analysis of the Global Oil and Gas Market Outlook and analyse the factors that define the correlation between energy cargoes and shipping.

Posidonia is organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy, the Union of Greek Shipowners and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and with the support of the Municipality of Piraeus and the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Announces Good Deeds for 2017 - 2018

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance – the #1 customer-rated provider of insurance for dogs and cats – is proud to announce two successful initiatives funded in 2017 – the ongoing scholarship program that helps veterinary and animal advocate students, and a large grant to the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF SPCA). As the 2018 Spring semester begins, two worthy college students received scholarship awards of $1,000 each to help pay for tuition. The Animal Advocate Scholarship is designated for a student with significant volunteer experience enrolled in an accredited institution in the United States, and the Veterinary Student Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in an accredited vet medicine program in the United States. Recipients are chosen based on educational merits and extracurricular dedication to improving animal welfare.

Spring 2018 Recipients

Stephanie Han, Animal Advocate Scholarship Recipient

"This award will help me to achieve my goal of becoming a shelter veterinarian," says winner Stephanie Han. "I want to be able to ensure that all shelters around the world are keeping animals happy and healthy and providing the public with a positive experience." Ms. Han is entering UC Davis, California.

Emily Plock, Veterinary Student Scholarship Recipient

"I have always had a passion for animals, whether it was nurturing unwanted stray cats back to health or bottle-feeding calves on my grandpa's farm. My interest for veterinary medicine, however, truly developed the moment I grasped a newborn lamb from an ewe's womb and pulled it into the world for its first breath," explains winner Emily Plock. "It was at that moment I knew that becoming a veterinarian was my destiny. The Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Scholarship will help offset the high cost of veterinary school. This will allow me to focus on what is truly important; the health and wellbeing of animals." Ms. Plock attends Iowa State.

Healthy Paws wishes both students best of luck in their endeavors, and salutes their dedication to helping animals. For those interested in applying, Healthy Paws is now accepting scholarship applications for the fall 2018 semester. The application deadline is June 30, 2018. More information on how to apply can be found at healthypawspetinsurance.com/academic-scholarships.

Healthy Paws Joins Forces with the SF SPCA

Additionally, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance donated a grant of $50,000 to the SF SPCA, earmarked for medical care and to help end animal abandonment in the San Francisco Bay area. As the largest animal welfare organization on the West Coast and founders of the No-Kill movement, the SF SPCA has always been at the forefront of animal welfare.

Through this grant, they were able to continue to treat upwards of 5,500 animals annually and continue daily operations. One of the two programs that received support was the continuation of the SF SPCA's Community Cares program (mobile vaccine clinics serving low-income neighborhoods in San Francisco). Each year thousands of animals receive free veterinary exams and vaccinations through these mobile clinics. "The Healthy Paws grant has provided vital funds that allow us to help some of the neediest animals that come into our shelter," says Cynthia Kopec, Chief Operations Officer (COO) at the SF SPCA.

The other program that benefitted was SPORE (Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Education), which helps animals who have contracted ringworm, a highly contagious fungal infection that can take several weeks to treat. "Most shelters simply aren't equipped to handle ringworm cases, and animals who contract ringworm are often euthanized," continues Ms. Kopec. "The program not only gives animals with ringworm a second chance, but also aims to teach other shelters how they can do the same."

Healthy Paws takes pride in helping pets and pet people nationwide, including pet health insurance. Find out more about their one simple pet insurance plan today at healthypawspetinsurance.com.

Nationwide launches fifth annual safety contest to prevent grain bin deaths in rural America

The program has saved lives and provided rescue training to hundreds of first responders across 18 states

Each year, farmers risk their lives by entering large grain bins to remove clumped or rotting grain while machinery is still running. Much like quicksand, flowing grain can bury a worker within seconds.

Because these accidents have become all too common, Nationwide is launching its fifth annual Nominate Your Fire Department Contest in honor of Grain Bin Safety Week. The goal is to prevent injuries by promoting safe bin-entry procedures, such as maintaining quality grain, testing bin atmosphere for toxic gases and wearing proper safety equipment.

This year, Grain Bin Safety Week runs from Feb. 18 – 24 and has been officially recognized by governors of the following states: Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, West Virginia, North Dakota and South Dakota. Nominations for the Nominate Your Fire Department Contest are open until April 30.

Since 2014, Nationwide has awarded grain bin rescue tubes and training to 48 fire departments in 18 states. The Westphalia Fire Department in Kansas and the Glenville Fire Department in Minnesota have both put their tubes and training to action — saving the lives of farmers trapped in grain bins.

"It felt like an eternity," said Glenville Fire Chief Matt Webb, who rescued a man last year that had fallen into a bin of rotting corn. "But the grain rescue training came back quickly, and it was a relief we had our own equipment. The program that's out there for these tubes and training is such a life-saving resource in our county."

There were 60 confirmed grain bin entrapments and incidents in other confined spaces on U.S. farms in 2016, according to Purdue University. That's a 27 percent increase from 2015, and Purdue estimates that an additional 30 percent of cases go unreported each year.

To help prevent further deaths and injuries, Nationwide collaborates each year with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) to provide safety training. The director of NECAS travels to training locations with a state-of-the-art grain entrapment simulator and rescue tube. The comprehensive training sessions include classroom education and a rescue simulation with the entrapment tool, which is loaded onto a 20-foot trailer and able to hold about 100 bushels of grain.

"Nationwide created this program and joined forces with partners across the country to make it happen for a single purpose — to save lives," said Brad Liggett, president of Nationwide Agribusiness, the No. 1 farm insurer1. "We understand the importance of the work that farmers are doing every day, and we will continue to make the rescue tubes and training available as long as these dangers exist."

New Car Technology is Making Drivers More Distracted, Finds Esurance

Survey finds drivers understand the danger of distracted driving, but are still willing to take the risk

A national survey of more than 1,000 U.S. drivers revealed a surprising disparity between our attitudes and behaviors when it comes to distracted driving. Esurance commissioned the survey to better understand distracted driving behaviors and whether or not high-tech car features, such as lane departure warning and automatic braking, are making drivers less distracted.

Distracted drivers willing to take the risk
Two things became increasingly clear in the survey results: 1) Most drivers recognize that using technology like phones and GPS is distracting behind the wheel, and, 2) They're willing to do it anyway. Ninety-one percent of surveyed drivers believe that texting while driving is distracting, while more than half (53 percent) of them admit to doing it anyway.

"Despite the fact that fatalities related to distracted driving are on the rise, this survey tells us that drivers are willing to take the risk and continue to give into the lure of using technology while driving," said Stephanie Braun, director, connected car at Esurance. "We're seeing more automakers try to address the issue of distracted driving through semi-autonomous features, but we're also mindful of the fact that some of these features could distract drivers even more and often give drivers a false sense of security."

Technology in cars making drivers feel safer, but more distracted
Forward-thinking automakers are working to make driving safer in the form of semi-autonomous technology, which is in-car tech features intended to do some of the driving. For example, that includes vehicles that can respond to upcoming hazards before the driver can.

Of those surveyed, nearly half (46 percent) of drivers with in-car tech features say it helps their driving, while 10 percent believe the opposite. Furthermore, some drivers are actually disabling these safety features. One out of four drivers who sought out tech in their new vehicles have since deactivated at least one feature. And overall, drivers with in-car tech tend to be slightly more distracted than those without it—29 percent admit that the warning sounds themselves (when you drift into another lane, for example) can be distracting.

Other interesting findings:

Even if truly self-driving cars were available now, most drivers aren't ready to give up the wheel—only 17 percent of surveyed drivers would sacrifice driving control to safely multi-task on the road.

Fifty-eight percent of drivers surveyed admit to some level of distracted driving, whether that's texting or navigating while driving. Not surprisingly, the survey respondents noted basic tech like mobile devices as the leading cause of their distraction (31 percent), followed by other drivers (30 percent) and personal distractions like interacting with other passengers and eating (20 percent).

Thirty percent of drivers say they give in to distractions when they're too busy or are multi-tasking, while another 25 percent will pick up their phone simply because they're bored.

One out of 10 surveyed has personally experienced a close call or accident caused by their own distracted driving. Another three out of 10 know someone who has experienced a distracted driving accident or close call.

Survey methodology: Esurance conducted an online survey in December 2017 through January 2018 of 1,057 vehicle owners in the U.S. Drivers with car tech refers to owners of vehicles with warning systems (blind spot monitor, lane departure warning, collision warning, etc.) or driver override features (lane keep, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control). Additionally, 15 interviews were conducted in December 2017 with owners of high-tech vehicles.

NICB: Rising Cost of Parts Fuels Interest of Car Thieves

If you own a late model car or truck, and you've been in a wreck, you may still be shaking your head over the repair bill. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says today's vehicles are loaded with expensive parts and technology that increase the costs of repairs, even in what may be considered a minor accident.

And those expensive parts will continue to drive car thefts as criminals steal cars and trucks to strip them and sell the parts on the black market.

Thefts of vehicles in the U.S. rose again last year by more than four percent, according to preliminary 2017 crime data from the FBI. Many of the vehicles that are recovered are missing wheels and rims or other key parts, while ones that are never recovered end up in chop shops where they are quickly dismantled and sold piece by piece.

The NICB looked at the cost of replacement parts for the top 10 stolen 2016 models. Average original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part prices were pulled from a database of over 24 million vehicle damage appraisals generated for insurance claims from 2016 and 2017. Parts such as bumpers, doors, fenders, hoods and headlights were on the list. Major components like the engine and transmission were not included.

The 2016 Toyota Camry, the most stolen 2016 model in our latest "Hot Wheels" report, had 15 commonly replaced components valued at nearly $11,000. That's not including labor.

"For the professional theft ring, stealing and stripping vehicles for parts has always been a lucrative business," said NICB Senior Vice President and COO Jim Schweitzer. "On today's cars and trucks, the parts are often worth more than the intact vehicle and may be easier to move and sell. That's why we see so many thefts of key items like wheels and tires and tailgates...there's always a market for them.

"We support law enforcement efforts, especially the auto theft task forces that focus on these kinds of theft rings. Shutting down a theft ring and a chop shop can have a major impact on reducing thefts in a community."

Anyone with information concerning insurance fraud or vehicle theft can report it anonymously by calling toll-free 800-TEL-NICB (800-835-6422), texting keyword "fraud" to TIP411 (847411) or submitting a form on our website. Or, download the NICB Fraud Tips app on your iPhone or Android device.

Μεταξύ αυτών, κάποιες έδωσαν «το παρών» μέσω των δύο μεγάλων ομαδικών περιπτέρων, της Promo Solution και της Great Greek Exports and Trade.
